In British Slang I Didn't Say "English" Slang Since I Want To Contrast It With American Slang A Navigator Would Be According To Webster's "an Unskilled Laborer Engaged In Such Works As The Making Of Canals Railways Or Other Public Works." This Sense Might Be More Familiar From The Shortened Version Of The Word -- "navvy." The Use Of The More "formal" Version I.E. "navigator" Helps Convey I Think A Sign Of Respect For The Work That These Men Were Doing.
